STRATEGO =]RC[= B-Company Settings
Posted: 16 Mar 2010, 13:13
Just an information about our current settings for our Bad Company 2 Server STRATEGO =]RC[= B-Company.
If settings will be changed, this thread will be updated.
At present I set the following configuration, aiming the server towards PRO gamers and not knife kiddies or score padders. The current Hardcore mode misses one or two settings in my opinion to be like "perfect", therefore we are not running a full Hardcore at present.
Since the mixture of game modes is not possible at this moment in time, the current map list runs RUSH maps only. The pure Conquest mode would be nice in addition (so we could mix up Rush and Conquest maps), however running pure Conquest does not really serve most player requests as it seems. Also compared to experienced BfV or BF2 Conquest Gamers, the maps in BC2 are to narrowed down sometimes, of course it cannot and will not be the same ... but, still the RUSH mode offers a lot of fun and it seems to me, the game was designed "around this idea"...
Squad TDM or Squad Rush are a different story, but for a 32-slot server, I believe Rush / Conquest mix would be ideal, if that is not possible, Rush might be the way to go ... open for your feedback anyway...
Minimap - Active
turning it off requires everybody to know the map(s) inside out, I am not in favor of this, you cannot expect every player to know each map, as well for spotting issue I like to see it on
Killcam - Deactivated
the killcam has always been in Battlefield games since BF1942, however it did not really got used, to assure some kind of realism for the gameplay. BC2 with the aim to have a COD4/5/6 competition, has the killcam active by default and many servers run it these days.
Seeing the development towards kinfe kiddies bunny hopping into your back, just knowing about your location due to the killcam (at least most of the times), I believe it has to be off. Furthermore, if I got a decent good spot on a certain map putting my fire towards a desired MCOM station, why the hell should the enemy know my location once he got hit? it was a nice graphical effect in the first days of this game, plus it made it visible who killed you with what kind of weapon, but with the increasing amount of a lot of players having higher ranks and all weapons and gadjets, whats the point then to "show" your position ...
The same way it becomes harder for you if you got killed to know "where it came from", but this is realism to my opinion.
In addition I see a lot of positive effect in not having the Killcam active, because the squad joining allows squad mates to select one of their buddies to join. Now if you still got you man down time, you can click on your buddy already and you see his position in a 3rd person view. It can help you to yell into Teamspeak about visible enemies. This is gone with Killcam off as well.
Also if you got killed, you won´t see yourself anymore from the top view for a few seconds. Same for the enemy if you killed him. So he cannot see your possible good location 2 meters behind a stone wall he was approaching, so he still does not know where you are ...
To many positive items following the general game behavior we could see develope over the past two weeks since the game came out. So for me it more or less becomes a must to have the killcam off.
3D Spotting - Deactivated
this setting actually allows you to spot the enemies (Q key) and their spotted locations will be shown ingame with the red tri angles about their heads. What an easy game for Snipers, once their team mates spotted you, the zoom in with their optical gadjets ... and ... so I guess I do not need to outline this any further.
The 3D spotting is definatley against the realism in the game, it makes it easier for defender to see the enemies coming, YES, but it also makes life easier for Snipers to allocate you faster than you know yourself your own position... ^^
Minimap Spotting - Active
aha ... here we go, yes of course, the minimap is on, I consider it at these days of modern warfare your personal transponder. Why in hell should spotted tanks or enemies not be shown on your transponder? A common way troops work today. So it is on, so spotting still works, at least some help for Defenders to "see it coming" ...
3rd Position Vehicle Cameras - Active
could be discussed, however players sometimes like to drive in 3rd position view. I do not have an issue with it, so we got it activated. It may helps as well to identify a sneaky C4 attack ...
Crosshair - Active
at left it activated for the moment. Again, the true Hardcore player would love to see this off. But since we do not run Hardcore at present, it can be left on. The only issue I may consider it to be better to turn off is against the lausy bunny hoppers. They can still aim at you much easier due to the crosshair while "flying" ... but I am not sure on the other hand, if turning it off would draw folks away from the current softcore players on our server.
Punkbuster / Friendly Fire / AutoBalance - Active
requires no further discussion, if the auto balance would work some day ...
Herewith the current configuration settings enabled server side are shown, guess this may has been of some interest for readers as well.
