In its seemingly never-ending mission to confuse gamers, Activision has recently confirmed that Infinity Ward is hard at work on the sequel to its 2007 best seller, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, simply titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Why the number 4 has apparently been dropped is unknown, although we can speculate it’s because Activision doesn’t like the idea of having two numbers in one game title.

To make matters worse, some sites and gamers are propagating that this game should be called Call of Duty 6, even though there wasn’t technically a Call of Duty 5, just Call of Duty: World at War, which really is the fifth entry into the franchise but isn’t labeled as such. And this just begs the question: Come 2010, what will Treyarch dub their follow-up to World at War?

Luckily, it’s all a big ploy from the devious ad guys at Activision. That recent merger with Blizzard must have really shaken things up over there for them to come up with something as crazy as this! They sent over the official press release for the actual next Call of Duty game to Minus World HQ via snail mail. That’s just how top secret this is…until now. We’ve been entrusted to break this news, and break it we shall. Soldiers and soldierettes, we give you Call of Duty 4 Part II Modern Warfare 2: World at War Again! Hit the jump for the press release.

Call of Duty 4 Part II Modern Warfare 2: World at War Again - Press Release

Santa Monica, CA - December 5th, 2008 - Do you love the smell of napalm in the morning? How about time-traveling soldiers, Nazi zombies, Japanese werewolves, and a smarmy British captain? Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) and Infinity Ward announced today that Call of Duty players will be thrust onto a battlefield that spans time itself next year for Call of Duty 4 Part II Modern Warfare 2: World at War Again. Players will face the German war machine and the Japanese empire from World War II, as well as fictional representations of real-life middle eastern terrorists groups. The machinations of an evil doctor with ties to Adolf Hitler has resulted in wormholes through time. As a result, U.S. and British armed forces are stretched painfully thin, fighting a war in two eras. And you thought the war on terror was tough! Players will tackle a variety of missions that will test their mettle and use new weapons like the Laser Beam Cannon and Acid Grenade in the most visually stunning, cinematic experience since Call of Duty: World at War.

“With Call of Duty 4 Part II Modern Warfare 2: World at War Again, we intend to create the ultimate war game,” said Grant Collier, Studio Head for Infinity Ward. “By meshing the past, the present, and what we think future warfare will be like, we’re basically giving players this huge sandbox to maim and slaughter in. For the first time ever, gamers can pit modern soldiers vs. WWII soldiers. Ever wonder how someone from the 101st Airborne Division during D-Day would react to a cybernetic-looking soldier wielding a laser gun? In 2009, you won’t have to wonder anymore. And because of the overwhelmingly positive fan reaction towards World at War’s Nazi zombie mode, we’re including a brand new bonus - Japanese Werewolves!”

Call of Duty 4 Part II Modern Warfare 2: World at War Again is in development for the Xbox360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, Nintendo DS, and PC. The title is scheduled for release next fall and has been rated EC through M by the ESRB.
